Speaker Plants Seeds of Knowledge and Trees in Nongoma
The Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature today kicked off her day with an insightful engagement with learners from Fundukhaliphe Secondary School as part of the Legislature’s Civic Education Programme.
The interactive session included a quiz where learners were tested on general knowledge, with questions focused on Parliament, Legislatures, and government. The activity was not only educational but also aimed at sparking curiosity among young people about how democracy works and why their voices matter.
Located in the Nongoma Local Municipality, about 43km from Nongoma town, Fundukhaliphe Secondary is a quintile 1 no-fee school that serves learners from deeply impoverished backgrounds. Recognising this, the Speaker emphasised the importance of education as a tool for empowerment and change.
The day’s programme began with a civic education talk during the school assembly, followed by a symbolic tree-planting session with stakeholders and selected learners. The tree planting highlighted the Legislature’s commitment to environmental awareness and leaving a living legacy for future generations.
Through such outreach initiatives, the KZN Legislature continues to bring Parliament closer to the people and ensure that young citizens understand their role in strengthening democracy.
