KwaZulu-Natal Legislature Hosts the 2024 Senior Citizens Parliament
On 17 October 2024, the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature hosted the annual #SeniorCitizensParliament which was attended by older persons from all Districts of KwaZulu-Natal providing them an opportunity to engage directly with Members of the Legislature (MPLs) and Members of the Executive Council (MECs) to raise and debate issues that affect them as senior citizens of KwaZulu-Natal.
The event was held at Hlanganani Hall, eSikhaleni, Richards Bay in the King Cetshwayo District under the theme “CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY: CREATING A SAFE AND CARING ENVIRONMENT FOR OLDER PERSONS”.
Senior citizens who attended received:
a) A presentation from SASSA on “The Means Test and its limitations on older persons pension and other social grants”;
b) Presentations from the Department of Social Development on what the Department’s Advocacy Programs are directed at:
- Reducing the abuse, disrespect and other social ills directed at older persons.
- Equipping and giving moral support to older persons, in preparation for court cases; and
c) SAPS intervention and Advocacy Programs directed at ensuring a safe and caring environment for older persons
