KWAZULU-NATAL LEGISLATURE SHOWERED WITH ACCOLADES FOR ACHIEVENING THREE SUCCESSIVE CLEAN AUDIT OUTCOMES
The office of the Auditor General has praised the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature for the manner it handles the public purse which has seen the institution accomplishing three consecutive clean audits.
Briefing Members of the legislature on audit outcomes today, the Auditor General (AG) Ms Tsakane Maluleke described the legislature’s three consecutive clean audits as a sterling work and urged the institution to sustain the good work. The AG’s office also presented the legislature with a prestigious trophy to the Speaker Hon Nontembeko Boyce as recognition of excellence.
Commenting on the audit outcomes, Boyce said the clean audit had been achieved because the institution’s officials had heeded the call for the legislature to lead by example. The institution’s Standing Committee on Oversight (Stacov) had also excelled by constantly maintaining oversight of the financial management of the legislature, Boyce added.
As an institution that is responsible for keeping a watchful eye on how government departments handled public finances, it was fundamentally important for the legislature to also lead by example, she said.
“When we began the sixth administration four years ago, we sat with our management and emphasized that it was fundamentally important for them to exercise vigilance to ensure good governance standards were adhered to. The political leadership did not only make a clarion for management to ensure that it handled the public purse with care and implements legislature programmes effectively, but it also ensured that it worked closely with management to ensure that our vision was implemented to the teeth,” added Boyce.
She thanked the Office of the Auditor General for its continued support and guidance which made it possible for the legislature to achieve its set targets. “The AG has urged us to sustain the legislature’s clean bill of health which encourages us to work even harder. Our target is to achieve the fourth clean audit for the year 2023/24, closing our term on positive upward trajectory.”
