THE CHAIRPERSON OF COMMITTEES DECLARES THE KZN LEGISLATURE’S MULTIPARTY OVERSIGHT VISITS IN AMAJUBA A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS
The Legislature has wrapped up its two-day Multiparty oversight visits in the Amajuba District Municipality, during which the legislators engaged in various discussions with residents, and evaluated the operation of state-funded projects.
Meetings and inspections were conducted in the municipalities of Newcastle, Emadlangeni, and Dannhauser as a prelude to the Taking Legislature to the People (TLTP) that is set for September of this year. MPLs, local authorities, and senior government officials made up the legislature delegations.
The visits were very successful, according to Honourable Doctor Ntuthuko Mahlaba, Chairperson of Committees, who also noted that the lawmakers were able to assess the delivery of services and learn about issues impacting communities.
“We had six teams led by Honourable Members which spent the first day of our Multiparty visits painstakingly engaging with residents on services delivery challenges that they face. Additionally, our teams visited several state-funded projects and identified problems that need to be fixed,” Mahlaba continued.
He said the findings of the two-day visits will be recorded in a thorough report that would be given to the Members of the Executive Council (MECs) and municipal leaders during the TLTP scheduled to take place in Amajuba District on the 22nd and the 23rd of September.
Since the TLTP’s establishment in 2004, the legislature has been able to use it to strengthen its oversight authority and motivate government to expedite service delivery. Additionally, it offers a forum for public involvement and facilitate communication on service delivery issues between common citizens and their government representatives.
The Chairperson of Committees emphasized that MECs and municipal leaders will be responsible for resolving any service delivery issues found during project visits and community engagements.
