The Returning Officer and three Assistant Returning Officers were sworn in by Judge President Thoba Portia Poyo-Dlwati of the High Court of KwaZulu-Natal, in her Chambers on 11 June 2024. The Returning Officers assist the Judge President in the election process.

The Swearing in of the Returning Officer and Assistants preceded the commencement of this First Sitting of the Seventh Democratic KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in the Main Chamber of the Legislature precincts in Pietermaritzburg.

All Members will be Sworn-In which will be followed by the Election of the Speaker, presided over by Judge President Thoba Portia Poyo-Dlwati.

The Speaker then presides over the election of the Deputy Speaker,

This is followed by the Election of the Premier, presided over by the Judge President.

The swearing in of Members, the election of the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker and the KZN Premier is followed by other procedural matters like the “Adoption of the Standing Rules”, the “Appointment of Permanent Delegates to the National Council of Provinces” and a Conferral of mandate on NCOP Delegation to nominate and/or vote for the Chairperson and Deputy Chairpersons of the National Council of Provinces before the Sitting is adjourned.

The KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in partnership with Trans Hope under the Speaker’s Social Responsibility will host the International Day Against Homophobia Biphobia Transphobia and all Phobias awareness campaign in Umlazi Q Hall, eThekwini Metro

The International Day Against Homophobia Biphobia Transphobia and all Phobias awareness campaign will be convened under the theme: "Right to Identity”. IDAHOBIT is an awareness campaign on secondary victimization of Trans and gender diverse individuals within the government institutions, providing a lived experiences and impact on Trans bodies after being faced with discrimination.

This shall insure engagement and provide resolutions on how to ensure government staff are trained on Sexual Orientation Gender Identity Expression and Sexual Characteristics SOGIECS.
