KWAZULU-NATAL LEGISLATURE HOLDS ITS FIRST SITTING OF THE 7TH TERM TO ELECT SPEAKER, DEPUTY SPEAKER, AND PREMIER

The Judge President of the KwaZulu-Natal High Court, Thoba Poyo-Dlwati, will preside over a Legislature House Sitting wherein there will be swearing-in of Members of the 7th Term of KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, who will either be taking an oath or making an affirmation of their loyalty to the Constitution before they become Members of the Legislature.

The House Sitting is scheduled as follows:

Date: 14 June 2024
Time: 10h00
Venue: Legislature Chamber, Pietermaritzburg

This sitting will be followed by a nomination and election of the Speaker; Deputy Speaker; Premier, and Chief Whip of the House. They will then be sworn in as required by Section 107 read with Section 111(1), Section 128(2) and Section 129 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

The new Speaker will then take the chair and preside over the remaining period of the Sitting.

The House Sitting will also nominate the Permanent Delegates to the National Council of Provinces who will be representing KwaZulu-Natal Province in the NCOP in Cape Town.

Members of the media will be given an opportunity to take photographs inside the House once the Speaker has taken the Chair. After the Sitting, the media will also have an opportunity to interact with the newly elected Speaker, Premier and MPLs including leaders of political parties represented in the Legislature.

RETURNING OFFICER AND 3 ASSISTANT RETURNING OFFICERS SWORN IN BY JUDGE PRESIDENT THOBA PORTIA POYO-DLWATI OF THE HIGH COURT OF KZN.

On Tuesday, 11 June 2024 the Returning Officer and three Assistant Returning Officers were sworn in by Judge President Thoba Portia Poyo-Dlwati of the High Court of KwaZulu-Natal, in her Chambers. The Swearing in of the Returning Officer and Assistants precedes the commencement of the First Sitting of the Seventh Democratic KwaZulu-Natal Legislature scheduled to take place on Friday, 14 June 2024 at 10H00 in the Main Chamber of the Legislature precincts in Pietermaritzburg.

At this first Sitting, all Members will be Sworn-In which will be followed by the Election of the Speaker, presided over by Judge President Thoba Portia Poyo-Dlwati. The duly elected Speaker then presides over the election of the Deputy Speaker, which is followed by the Election of the Premier, presided over by the Judge President.

The swearing in of Members, the election of the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker and the KZN Premier is followed by other procedural matters like the “Adoption of the Standing Rules”, the “Appointment of Permanent Delegates to the National Council of Provinces” and a Conferral of mandate on NCOP Delegation to nominate and/or vote for the Chairperson and Deputy Chairpersons of the National Council of Provinces before the Sitting is adjourned.

IDAHOBIT is an awareness campaign on secondary victimization of Trans and gender diverse individuals within the government institutions. Providing a lived experiences and impact on Trans bodies after being faced with discrimination. This shall insure engagement and provide resolutions on how to ensure government staff are trained on Sexual Orientation Gender Identity Expression and Sexual Characteristics SOGIECS.

ADDRESS BY ZULU KING MISUZULU KA ZWELITHINI TO THE KZN LEGISLATURE STATE OF THE PROVINCE ADDRESS BY PREMIER HON NOMUSA DUBE-NCUBE

Zulu King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini will address the KZN Legislature on Tuesday the 27th of February at the Oval Cricket stadium in Pietermaritzburg. The King’s address is in terms of the Legislature Rules (Standing Rule 10 (1) (a).

The King’s address will be followed by the State of the Province Address (SOPA) which will be delivered by provincial Premier Honourable Nomusa Dube-Ncube on Wednesday the 28th of February. The Premier’s address is per Standing Rule 10 (1) (b) of the legislature rules.

Both events will start at 11am, however MPLs, guests and members of the media are expected to be seated by 10am. 

All vehicles entering the Oval Cricket Ground will need to be searched by the SAPS Explosives Unit. This process is as per the Explosives Act, No. 15 of 2003 and has to take place at least 100m away from the venue.
